2027 VW Atlas: 7 Things to Know Before You Buy

2027 VW Atlas: 7 Things to Know Before You Buy

The redesigned 2027 Volkswagen Atlas starts at $41,610 with 282 hp. Prices, trims, MPG, rivals and who should buy it.

Let's be honest: the old Volkswagen Atlas had been around since 2017, and it showed. So when VW announced a ground-up redesign for 2027, a lot of family-SUV shoppers (me included) wanted to know one thing: is it actually worth the money now?

I dug through the official numbers and the best reporting out there. Here are the seven things that matter most.

Prefer another angle? Here is a second official look at the new Atlas from Volkswagen.

1. The Price Jumped

This is the biggest headline. Volkswagen priced the redesigned Atlas from $41,610 before a $1,525 destination fee, which is $2,350 more than the outgoing model's starting price. Edmunds puts the all-in figure at $43,135 for front-wheel drive and $45,135 for all-wheel drive.

TrimStarting price (before destination)
Atlas SE$41,610
Atlas SE with Technology$45,610
Atlas SEL R-Line$52,110
Atlas SEL Premium R-LineHigher, check VW for current pricing

Sources: Carscoops and Edmunds. Adding AWD costs roughly $2,000 more according to Edmunds' figures.

2. More Power and Better Mileage

Every 2027 Atlas gets an updated turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder making 282 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, which is 13 hp more than before. An eight-speed automatic is standard and AWD is optional (GearJunkie).

The EPA numbers are a small step forward too:

  • Front-wheel drive: 22 city / 29 highway / 25 combined mpg
  • All-wheel drive: 20 city / 27 highway / 23 combined mpg

Details are in TFLcar's fuel economy report. You can compare any vehicle's official ratings on FuelEconomy.gov.

Heads-up: there is no hybrid yet. Reports say one is not coming for at least a few years, while some rivals already offer hybrids.

3. It Looks New, but Feels Familiar

VW kept the big, boxy shape that families like, but smoothed it out. The body grows just one inch overall, while the wheelbase, width and height stay the same, and the rear gets a wide LED light bar. The third row is still roomy enough for adults, according to this launch recap.

It rides on VW's MQB Evo platform, the same architecture behind the latest Tiguan (TFLcar first look). It is built in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

4. The Cabin Got Smarter

  • Digital cockpit: a 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro display comes on every Atlas.
  • Practical touches: the shifter moved to the steering column, which freed room for two wireless phone chargers.
  • Connected extras: a three-month trial of In-Vehicle Premium (Wi-Fi, navigation with live traffic, myQ garage control and AirConsole games).
  • Driver assistance: features such as Travel Assist, Emergency Assist and Park Distance Control are included.

As always, driver-assistance tech helps, but it never replaces paying attention. Check crash-test results at IIHS and NHTSA once they are published for this model.

5. Which Trim Makes Sense?

SE ($41,610): LED lighting, keyless entry, a motion-activated power liftgate and 18-inch wheels. For most families this is already well equipped.

SE with Technology ($45,610): a fancier look with illuminated door handles and glowing VW badges, plus more tech. This is the sweet spot for many buyers.

SEL R-Line ($52,110): sportier bumpers, a blacked-out grille, 21-inch wheels and power-folding mirrors with logo puddle lights. It is nice, but you pay for the style.

6. Rivals You Should Cross-Shop

The three-row SUV class is crowded. The all-new 2027 Kia Telluride starts lower at $40,735 according to Motor1. Hybrid options like the Toyota Grand Highlander and the Telluride family still lead the class on fuel economy, as noted by TFLcar. Visit Kia's website and Volkswagen's website to compare current offers side by side.

7. So, Who Should Buy It?

Buy it if: you want a spacious, comfortable three-row SUV with a stronger engine and a more modern cabin, and you will take the time to test drive it.

Think twice if: fuel economy is your top priority (a hybrid rival will save you more at the pump) or you want the lowest possible price.

The 2027 Atlas is a real step up, but VW is asking for real money. My advice: get quotes from a few dealers, compare the Telluride and your other shortlist picks, and choose the trim by features you will actually use.
